Introduction about Reverse Osmosis System

The process of osmosis dates back to 1748 when a French scientist discovered this concept, although at that time it wasn’t put to use for any such device. In 1940’s, around 250 years later, modified form of this concept now identified as reverse osmosis was found out which was then used to convert saline sea water into pure H20 molecules. Since then there have been a lot of technological advancements that gradually led to the development of the reverse osmosis systems for water purifying, although the essential fundamental of reverse osmosis principal remains unchanged.

  • Beginning

In 1940 when the American universities began researching about the osmosis concept to purify water, this research was pushed and encouraged by the Kennedy administration to convert sea water into drinking water with the aim of overcoming water shortage in the country.

In 1959, after continued efforts, two of their scientists were finally able to convert a polymer named cellulose acetate into a reverse osmosis membrane that could filter the water contaminants giving away pure and filtered water. When water was passed through this membrane under a set pressure then it would only release water leaving behind the salts and TDS found in the sea water. Through their subsequent tests they also found that the membrane was strong enough to tolerate fresh water and sea water under certain pressure and was durable enough to be used for water filtration on a continuous basis.

Since this process was opposite of the natural osmosis process where the less concentrated liquid flows through a selective membrane towards the liquid of higher concentration in order to balance the content, this filtration technique was termed as reverse osmosis and the systems developed were termed as best reverse osmosis systems to purify water.

  • First foot

First water filtration plant using the reverse osmosis plant was built in Coalinga, California and in 1965 it launched a pilot program that had attracted the attention of all the commercial and government institutions around the world. In 1977 Cape Coral in Florida became first of the American municipality to use the reverse osmosis process on a huge scale with the starting capacity of 3 million gallons of water every day. After its success, in 1985,Cape Coral had the largest reverse osmosis water purifying plant in the world.

The idea of converting abundant sea water into drinking water had actually made every one curious as it was the best way to overcome the shortage of drinking water in all the parts of the world.
Gradually, as and when the time passed, many technological players got into this field and started researching to improve the technology and subsequently the quality of the membrane also started improving.

  • Developments

Once the plants to purify the water using reverse osmosis were developed, this technology was constantly updated to develop more potential systems that could be used by people at their homes and can make the drinking water generation more affordable for common people. This led to the developments of purifiers that we use in our homes today. These technological advancements also led to quality improvements of the membrane that led to better quality of drinking water with the bare minimum amount of salt and TDS after being purified. These systems are used by people satisfactorily today. If you are interested in these purifiers, read the numerous reverse osmosis system reviews to understand the existing user experience.

History of Reverse Osmosis System in Conclusion

The concept of osmosis was identified long back, post which the concept of reverse osmosis was discovered and put to use. When the success of this process was visible to everyone, then countries started investing time and money into this field of purifying water which finally led to the development of purifiers at our homes and are still under development to give more and more options for healthy drinking water.
